Between 1st January and 29th December 2019, 833 confirmed cases of Lassa fever (LF) were reported in 23 States, across 86 Local Government Areas. 78% of these cases were reported in three “hotspot” states.

A swift containment of the large outbreak was facilitated by a multisectoral and multidisciplinary strategic One Health Emergency Operation Centre coordination led by the NCDC.

This publication articulates the One Health (human, environment, and animal health) approach to the incident management of the 2019 Lassa fever outbreak response in Nigeria.

Yesterday, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa made his first appearance at the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) press briefing as the NCDC Director General.

In addition to his recognition of His Excellency, President Buhari’s commitment to health security, he thanked the Federal Ministry of Health, PSC and key stakeholders for the warm welcome.

Dr Adetifa spoke on ongoing efforts by NCDC to sustain Nigeria’s #COVID19 response & urged Nigerians to #TakeResponsibility for their safety:

“For context, of the 150 #COVID19 deaths recorded over the last 2 months, 81% were unvaccinated, 3% were partially vaccinated while 4% were fully vaccinated. This reiterates that chances of a severe outcome from #COVID19 are higher in unvaccinated persons."

“While vaccination coverage has not lived up to the ideals of equity required to assure global health security, it is essential we play our part by utilising all opportunities to get vaccinated.”

- Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, NCDC Director General
